Rutland Sailing Club has a Wireless Hotspot which will allow you to use your wireless laptop, Mac or PDA to access the Internet at broadband speeds from the clubhouse. This is a free service for all members, temporary members and guests.
|
Laptops
Laptops that have the new Intel® Centrino mobile technology with integrated Wireless LAN capability should work automatically. If your laptop is not wireless enabled you will need an IEEE 802.11b wireless access card (PCMCIA card or USB dongle).
PDAs
IEE802.11 enabled PDAs running Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 and above or Palm OS 4.0 and above should be ok.
Wireless settings
Your wireless settings need to be:
- Service Set Identifier (SSID) set to 'RSC Hotspot' (case sensitive)
- Network type set to 'infrastructure'
- Wireless network key (WEP) disabled
- You may have to disable your Internet Explorer proxy settings if you are using a company laptop.
Firewall
Ensure that your PC is configured with a software firewall before connecting to this service. XP users should see this Microsoft® article for more details.
Connection - First Time
Once you've sorted the above, connection is quite easy. The first time you try and access the Internet simply press the login button in your browser and go.

FAQs
Q. Can I send and receive email from the hotspot?
A. Yes. Webmail should be used to send and receive emails when using any hotspot. Webmail is the most secure and universal method of email access when away from home. Visit the web portal of your ISP for details of their webmail service.
Q. Can I VPN into my office?
A. Yes
Q. How do I find if I've been connected to the Hotspot?
A. Open an Internet Browser and access the Internet. If you do not see a login page then check that your IP address is 10.10.10.1xx
Examine your network properties or try running IPCONFIG to see your IP address.
Q. My IP Address is not 10.10.10.1xx. How do I fix this?
A. Ensure that you select 'DHCP' or 'Obtain an IP address automatically' in your Network Properties window.
Q. My IP Address is correct, but I still can not access the Internet.
A. Ensure that your browser's DNS settings are set to automatic.
Q. Is my computer secure?
A. This is an 'open' wireless facility. Like many other Hotspots this facility can not prevent other hotspot users (peers) or hackers from accessing your computer if your computer is operated on a wireless network without the appropriate security. A software firewall should be activated on your PC to reduce the risk of illegal access. Additionally, wherever your PC is operated, all solicited Internet usage has some risk from Trojan Horse, worms, malware, spyware, and other virus infection. It is advisable to operate an up-to-date Virus Checker and disable file sharing.
Q. My Centrino Laptop can not see the hotspot, why is this?
A. Your inbuilt wireless adapter may not be enabled. Try pressing Fn + F2 (or as appropriate) on your keyboard to activate your wireless adapter.
Q. My PC is wireless G, will this work on the RSC Hotspot?
A. Yes. Wireless G adapters should work on RSC's wireless B network but you may need to configure your adapter's settings to enable this activity.
Q. What is the Hotspot's coverage?
A. This depends on your equipment but the signal is excellent in the Training Room, Commodore's Room and Wetbar. If you are experiencing connection difficulties in these areas then you have found a deadspot and relocating your equipment a few feet should fix this.
Q. Are there any operating constraints?
A. This service is subject to an acceptable use policy. Download volume constraints and content filtering are implemented at this hotspot. Please be aware this is a shared bandwidth service an the DSL speed is not very high at this remote location.
Q. Am I being monitored?
A. RSC log MAC addresses, qty of downloads and times of login and disconnects. RSC do not observe or log your Internet transactions but this is an 'open' wireless facility and you should observe the appropriate security measures. |
